INTRO:
Welcome to this Mystic Life PODCAST: A podcast that aims to look at the world differently with total responsibility for sight. When we come together, what we’re truly interested in is mind watching. And through a process of taking total responsibility for sight, we experience mind training. The reference that you will hear me use in this podcast is A Course in Miracles, a non-dual pathway of Awakening for the mind.
So, let’s begin…
EPISODE: Perception & Persons part 1/2
Following on from our conversation about Projection makes Perception, I thought we’d talk a little more about why A Course in Miracles is called a pathway of relationship.
Because at first it does really seem to be about forgiving “people,” forgiving people that you dislike, forgiving people that dislike you, it does very much seem to be an interpersonal curriculum.
And while that’s a wonderful place to start and looking to see innocence in our brother and sister is definitely a stepping stone, it’s not the ultimate forgiveness that A Course of Miracles is alluding to.
And so I thought we’d take a couple of moments to reiterate what we came to with projection makes perception and then see how that pertains to relationship, Holy Relationship and seeing everything as a reflection of the mind.
So as we begin to take our first steps, our first foray into Forgiveness and we are looking to have holy encounters with our brothers and sisters in the world, what we need to notice is that we have very much discounted ourself as being one of those persons. And so it’s part of the mesmerism to become fixated and focused on the people on the screen of the movie that we’re watching with Jesus in the theater with our popcorn.
And yet we’re fixated on one particular character and not even just objectively looking at that character, but fixated on their point of view, their perception of what’s occurring. And when we become over focused on a particular point of view, we lose the big picture that forgiveness is aiming to bring to our awareness for peace. And so when we are looking at that little character that we perceive ourself to be on the screen and we’re invested in their point of view, we’re looking through their eyes, so to speak. Our focus then becomes on everyone else. It’s a hyper vigilance for and against the concerns of the character.
And you can hear even from just me sharing that much what a defended position and point of view that is because it’s as if the whole world revolves around this little character. And humans are pretty delicate things. They’re not very robust. They break. They bend. Whether you perceive that to be to someone else’s will or through an accident, it’s a very defended, vulnerable, fragile point of view. And so naturally, we are looking actually with suspicion rather than love at everyone around us. We’re guesstimating at every moment the threat level they pose to us, even those we claim to love.
Because this guarded nature is actually warranted if you perceive yourself to be a person in a world fighting the good fight, doing your best, trying harder. It’s totally reasonable. And that’s why the true teaching of a course in miracles aims at peeling you back off the screen into this greater sense of presence that you are a broader perspective that eventually leads you to accepting the vision of the Holy Spirit which is beyond time and space. It’s the total correction of perception. It’s a state of innocence.
It’s a view of the happy dream. And from here there are no problems. There are no people! Which is the main reason there are no problems. What we’re looking at from this perspective is an amorphous shapeshifting colors and light and it’s only reflecting the light in the mind back in a pure form. That’s what the happy dream symbolizes.
And so remember, children only waken from happy dreams. And if you find yourself at a point in your life when you’re struggling and things are challenging and hard, take comfort from the fact that this is going towards a happy dream scene. Because that’s the only way you can rouse a sleeping child from a nightmare is with kindness, gentleness, and love towards a reality that is safe and secure and eternal. And so you cannot shake a child awake. You must gently rouse them, rubbing their back, stroking their forehead, saying, “You’re okay. You’re okay. It’s all right. It’s all right.”
And that’s what the Holy Spirit is doing with us as we look upon this screen of time and space. Whether we call it the cosmos, the universe, the world, our country, our community, our cooperative, whatever we’re looking upon, our family, our friends, our children, our lovers. The most important thing to see is the ownership in what I just described: my people, my world, my universe, my cosmos.
And that’s where the strain comes from. That’s where forgiveness is needed. The possession of what you are seeing. And this course aims to dispossess you, which is wonderful to be not possessed, dispossess you of the demented idea that you are responsible for the world you have made.
What you are responsible for, and it’s very clear in a course of miracles when it says this, is you are responsible for sight. You are responsible for the judgment you have upon seeing the world that you have created, but you have no control over the world because it’s only a reflection of a state of mind. And so it’s much further back in the bucket seats with the popcorn and the big gallon of soda that we are going to be able to look clearly and see the entire scene.
You know that yo are looking at the entire scene when you’re looking at the character that you think you are as well as the character you think they are. Once you step back enough that you’re not looking through the eyes of the character you perceive yourself to be, you’re removing yourself sufficiently to be able to look at the whole play of awakening that’s happening in front of you. And this is the same if that what’s happening in front of you is happening on television or what’s happening in front of you seems to be in another country but you’re hearing about it.
It’s all to do with watching “the one” who believes they’re experiencing the world.
The character is never going to become happy, but you, the one watching, is going to be overjoyed with the recognition of who you are and what is true. And I can promise you that 100% because for myself I have tested it. And so I invite you to also give this a go because what have you got to lose: Pain, blame, shame?
Really, it’s it’s a no lose situation. In fact, not only is it a no- lose situation, but if you think you’re playing a game, I’d like to remind you that you’ve already won.
O N E one. And it’s coming to that winning understanding of the world that will
allow you to come on an adventure with the spirit in this spirit-led life
instead of being put upon and frustrated and tortured by the point of view of the character on the screen. Now, you might be starting to feel like that’s a bit callous. I’m just abandoning that little persona that I think I am to the screen and to the story of time and space. And I’m not going to do anything to ensure and take
care and, you know, make happen what would make that little one feel safe in the world.
And I’m going to freely admit that that will be your predominant desire throughout your life. Yet, I would also say, has it worked for you yet? No. Even the richest people in the world, even the people with the most love in the world, even the people with the best yachts in the world, and the people with the most profound callings and jobs, if they’re coming from that point of view, they’re going to be miserable.
Happiness isn’t possible from that point of view.
It doesn’t exist at that level, not consistently. And little spurts or tastes or glimpses even of what’s possible. You know, future happiness is not your just reward. You have cause for happiness now.
Be not content with future happiness.
It has no meaning, and is not your just reward.
For you have cause for freedom now.
—A Course in Miracles (T-26.VIII.9:1-3)
And I feel that if we were to commit to anything in this moment, it would be to being shown by the Holy Spirit how that’s true. And so I’ve come to claim for myself in this moment the perspective that allows me to with forgiveness witness to the character I play upon the screen and witness to the interactions that that character seems o have. And when the POV, the point of view of that character seems to be glued to the interactions and the situational thinking of time and space. I want to be able to remember instantaneously that it is not up to me to care for the character, that it is not up to me to make things happen in time and space, and that it is not my just reward to work towards future happiness.
And when we make that commitment to ourselves, and this is the time to do it in your life. If you’re listening to me already and you’ve gotten this far, you’re halfway there to making the commitment or you’ve already made the commitment and you’re just rejoicing with me.
Either way, that commitment to being clueless, carefree, and cared for first requires that you acknowledge that what you’ve ever done and taken care of and thought you did in the world didn’t amount to much.
Now, I know you’ve been taught to rely on your past and your past perceptions
and your achievements and what you’ve avoided and where you’ve succeeded.
And I’m telling you today that if you keep that list of achievements, you must also keep that list of mistakes. And what we’re going for here is to see the mistaken thinking behind both lists because that’s where relief will come from.
That’s where forgiveness is offered and that’s where our acceptance is needed.
And remember, you’re not asked to do forgiveness. You’re asked to accept that everything everything is forgiven.
And so if we can humbly come into an awareness that if everything is forgiven already, past, present, future, all space and time as we could ever experience it,
then why would we think it’s our role to manage and make things happen?
How could we not be repeating in a karmic farce,
mistake after mistake when the error that needs correction is in fact our perception?
Why would we keep trying harder, better, to do more in time and space to finagal form if we recognized that the
correction that was needed, the true error that had happened was a perceptual error? Why would we continue to focus on trying harder to not make the error again instead of just simply taking and accepting accepting it’s so simple accepting the correction for the perceptual problem that we have.
We are completely mistaken in everything we are seeing and time can waste as well as be wasted. And yet, you know, there is a limit to your endurance for pain. Thank God. And everyone comes to this in the end. It’s inevitable. And by everyone, I mean the mind. And yet it seems to run through the experience of 8 billion separate seeming points of view. And as you withdraw from your investment on the POV, the point of view, first person player of the game you think you’re in, and you pause even momentarily from the rushing around and the fixing and the saving and the taking care of.
You have a very real opportunity to begin to notice the patterns that are playing.
And one of the things that the word pattern has given us and then at the same time taken away is the idea that it’s the pattern of a person. Now, it may seem to show up in the persona or mask of the seeming character and point of view you’re playing through. Yet, the forgiveness is really at looking at why it’s being maintained in the mind, why it keeps playing, what’s generating it, what’s renewing it again and again like a dynamo keeping it going. Almost perpetual motion, it seems. And how even with having left that bad relationship and started a fresh with a whole new commitment, do we see ourselves making the same mistakes again and again and again?
And the answer is because we’re still looking from a personal point of view. Only when you withdraw to that greater vision to which you’re leaning into with the comforter, with the Holy Spirit in your mind, only that broader perspective on the entire scene and how it’s all working together for good will allow you to release your attachment, which is, you know, the dynamo on the spoke of your bicycle and start to freewheel. without its perpetual motion. Because what we need to see is we have an investment in this continuing. And even if it’s subconscious or even if it’s conscious and you’ve risen it to awareness, if you’re still taking personal responsibility for the patterns and problems of the person, then you’re still in the same error.
And the focus is on correcting the error on the screen from a personal point of view instead of taking the Correction. Accepting it, remember just Accepting it in the mind. And what’s the Correction? “Oh. Oh no. You were coming from guilt and shame there. That’s all. You were being a person. Do you see? You’re just mistaken in who you are and your Innocence!”
An acceptance of forgiveness is accepting your identity in Christ, and accepting your innocence.
