This gentle passage to a higher prayer,

a kind forgiveness of the ways of earth,

Yet first true healing must have come
to bless the mind
with loving pardon
for the sins it dreamed about

PODCAST INTRO
Welcome to this Mystic Life podcast, a podcast that aims to look at the world differently with total responsibility for sight.

PODCAST EPISODE: What is Service?
In this episode titled What is Service? We explore and deepen as we unwind the mind from its perceptual problem. We are looking to experience not only a clarity but a peace with what our function is. Because this right-minded perspective offers everything you want.

I feel I’d like to start with a prayer. It’s not one of those passages in the Course that is well known as a prayer. And yet today I find it, and it finds me, in a prayerful mode expanding in trust and softening into eternity. So let’s begin:

“This gentle passage to a higher prayer. A kind of forgiveness of the ways of earth, can only be received with thankfulness. Yet first true healing must have come to bless the mind with loving pardon for the sins it dreamed about and laid upon the world.” (S-3.II.4:1-2)

And that’s from The Song of Prayer which is one of the two pamphlets of A Course in Miracles.

And I feel this gentle passage to a higher prayer is of immediate need in the mind. Because it addresses twofold that it’s only in thankfulness, you can experience this higher prayer. And it’s only through experience and acceptance of pardon for the sins it dreamed about, and then laid upon the world that forgiveness can be experienced. This is the “true service” that a course in miracles aims to teach.

Because without the gratitude for the Vision of the Holy Spirit, and the subsequent experiential experience of accepting pardon, for the sins that we now accept and understand were dreamed and laid upon the world. Without the withdrawal of our investment in those dreams, that we have laid upon the world, we cannot come in a gentle passage to that higher prayer.

How lovely is that? A kind of forgiveness of the ways of earth.

It is accepting in its profound simplicity that the Forgiveness that we are embracing on this pathway of a course in miracles is not forgiveness as the world understands it. It is a forgiveness that withdraws investment in the ways of earth.

And in committing to holding the vision of the Holy Spirit, as we allow ourselves to be moved into right-mindedness, we can envision not so much a new earth as, “What Is” without the interference of guilt and shame and blame.

And so for this conversation, I have brought together all of the descriptions of service that A Course in Miracles contains. And as I was reading through the different quotes, I realized that when put together, they read seamlessly as a whole. And so I will read that for you now.

~ This is a verbal transcript the perfectly punctuated Course quotes are shared after ~

A miracle is a service. It is the maximal service you can render to another. The miracle joins in the atonement by placing the mind in the service of the Holy Spirit. The miracle is a sign that the mind has chosen to be led by me in Christ’s service.

In the service of the right mind, the denial of error frees the mind and reestablishes the freedom of the will. Because of the strength of its vision, it brings the mind into its service. This places it in the service of Spirit where perception is changed.

The body in the service of the ego can hurt other bodies. But this cannot occur unless the body has already been confused with the mind. But in the service of the Holy Spirit, it can help you recognize part of reality and thus appreciate all of it.

In the service of uniting, it becomes a beautiful lesson in communion, which is value until Communion IS.

The Holy Spirit does not see the body as you do because he knows the only reality of anything is the service it renders God on behalf of the function He gives it.

You are accustomed to the notion that the mind can see the source of pain where it is not. The doubtful service of such displacement is to hide the real source of guilt and keep from your awareness the full perception that it is insane.

But be you rather grateful that you can be the means to serve His end. This is the only service that leads to freedom. The gentle service that you give the Holy Spirit is service to yourself.

Because the Holy Spirit gives the dream its function. It was made for hate and will continue in death services. The body, valueless and hardly worth the least offense, need merely be perceived as quite apart from you, and it becomes a healthy, serviceable instrument through which the mind can operate, until its usefulness is over.

It is not free to be the means of helping in a plan which far exceeds its own protection and which needs its service for a little while. Today I give its service to the Holy Spirit to employ as He sees fit.

Let me not see it more than this today. Of service for a while and fit to serve, to keep its usefulness while it can serve and then to be replaced for greater good. Yet here is also a great channel of hope and healing in the Holy Spirit’s service. We thank the body then for all the service it has given us.

So that’s our context. And when we come with holy empty arms unto our God, we can be relieved of illusions.

[Sarah goes into a mystical experience at this point the very long silences have been edited]

The mind is quite still now. It does not crave or care for speaking. It asks only that you honor your internal Teacher and Listen. You are a miracle worker and the world has need of you now.

You have need of you now, in this function for which you were Given. See that all healing is in mind, and do not be deceived on perceptual limitations when they restrict you not! Bring this Presence, this Awareness to every moment you live, wherever you may have been placed. And yet also allow the One walking to Guide you out of any seeming circumstances that may no longer serve.

Rather than feeling unfairly treated and a victim of the world, this is the time to allow yourself to be moved to wherever is truly helpful. Yielding to the absolute joy and delight of His Way!

Committing to accepting that you do not know how to serve, and be shown.

A miracle is a service.
It is the maximal service you can render to another.
The miracle joins in the Atonement by placing the mind
in the service of the Holy Spirit.
The miracle is a sign that the mind
has chosen to be led by me in Christ’s service.
—A Course in Miracles, (T-1.I.18:1-4)

And if in your own life you appear to be a guide to families, friends, communities, countries. It is even more vital that you let Him lead the way, for He knows what’s best for all in every seeming circumstance. And we cannot interfere with His plan. His plan is only meant as a blessing for you.

And yet though we have spent perhaps many years in studying and unlearning the ways of the world. Now a truer demonstration is needed so that we may embrace the experience that A Course in Miracles aims to provide.

And what is that experience? One of being fearlessly led through the world of seeming time and space. As a happy learner, a little child, one who is sunk into profound certainty that you need not be careful nor care less because he cares for you.

You need be neither careful nor careless;
you need merely cast your cares upon Him
because He careth for you.
You are His care because He loves you.
—ACIM (T-5.VII.1:4-5)

Our most common misunderstanding about the world we look upon, and even when we come to this pathway because of the conditioning of the world in which we’ve been primed to watch through fear. There is a misunderstanding of what service is. Service is not “to people.”

In the pathway of A Course in Miracles. The invitation is to look at what serves the awakening mind. Whatever backdrop which is highly individualized that you may appear to be in whatever your life looks like right now, it is merely a backdrop for the play of awakening for the mind to Forgive its misperceptions.

And so when we unfurl from our dependency of thinking of service as if to people and bodies and places and things, we can see that what immediately illuminates in the mind is a great sense of relief from false responsibility and a great delight in our function.

Now that we are clear what service truly is, we can be about our father’s business without any adjustment to our current world. We will no longer in fact adjust “to” our current world. And yet the story may be moved into ever increasing experiences that look and feel expansive.

And it is also important that we not cling to the seeming scenarios that are habitual in our lives because in so doing we are limiting the reach of the miracle, and what the Holy Spirit can do through us. Not just for the seeming world, but for the mind we experience ourselves to be.

And if you want to know what to teach your children right now, teach your children to pray, with an open heart, to the one who loves them. Not as a genie to fulfill their wishes, but as a friend. A Beloved Friend who they can depend upon in any seeming circumstances to illuminate what is eternal and true.

And by the joy of that Seeing easily allow them to come into alignment with “What Is” and what is for them in every moment, predicting no sacrifice.

You will not be able “to plan” your way out of what the mirror of the mind is now revealing.

You can only allow yourself to be gently Awakened by the revelations that are appearing on the screen. And these revelations are not really about world affairs, or systems of abuse, or secrets and lies that may appear to have been hidden from you. This revelation is about what you have been hiding from yourself!

You are the light of the world. And you hiding that light serves no one. You dimming the Presence that you carry, lest anyone be offended, no longer serves anybody.

Now is the time to brilliantly shine! Not necessarily in your words or your deeds or your actions as you “perceive them” in the world, but in your profound understanding of your Calling and the purpose you have given to everything!

You are here to serve the awakening mind.

And every morning when you rise and you do the “Rules for Decision” in Chapter 30, you can alight upon your day, high in the Light of Truth, knowing that God goes with you wherever you go to happily serve this awakening mind. This is the true role of the miracle worker.

And if there are words to be given that are to be spoken, it will be natural. It will be unavoidable, because the transparency with which you live your life, meaning the exuberance with which you allow the joy that you feel in your own heart to extend will be palpable!

This is not about converting people to another theology. It is however about allowing the really “Good News” that Jesus came to bring, to emit like a beacon of light, like a blessing upon the world in every thought you think about yourself and the whole universe.

And so the second part, in which we acknowledge that: the sins we have dreamed and laid upon the world need to be withdrawn. We find that in holding the Vision of the Holy Spirit. This is natural.

But we are not trying to “overcome” anything of the world. We are in fact withdrawing our investment, and understanding that we are “under no laws but God’s.”

And in this withdrawal of thought, and effort, and focus, we can instead become a beacon of light broadcasting a different experience to the world. And these little antenna of seeming miracle workers all over the planet, joined in this vibration of Love, holds more sway on the perceptual realm than any other action you could take, because “a miracle (a shift in perception) is the highest service you can offer.”

So whether you appear to bake bread, serve sandwiches, clean floors, run companies, fish in the sea, the miracle mindedness with which you do these activities is what matters, not only most, but always.

And if something is no longer guided for you and is maximized as an avenue through which you can extend your own understanding, and experience of Christ. Then allow it to recede when it goes, and it will.

And allow yourself to be Given according to the function you now brightly hold. A new pathway that seems to through Divine Providence to care for you as you walk this world, while truly giving you, all the adventures of Forgiveness that are needed for awakening the mind!

What does A Course in Miracles say about Service?

Service as mentioned in A Course in Miracles. All quotes are shared here in a row in the order as they appear in the book as a complete teaching! Below that section the individual quotes are listed with references etc.

A miracle is a service. It is the maximal service you can render to another. The miracle joins in the Atonement by placing the mind in the service of the Holy Spirit. The miracle is a sign that the mind has chosen to be led by me in Christ’s service.

⬤ T-1.I
A miracle is a service. ²It is the maximal service you can render to another.
—ACIM (T-1.I.18:1-2)

⬤ T-1.I
A miracle is a service. ²It is the maximal service you can render to another. ³It is a way of loving your neighbor as yourself. ⁴You recognize your own and your neighbor’s worth simultaneously.
—A Course in Miracles (T-1.I.18:1-4)

⬤ T-1.IV
The miracle joins in the Atonement by placing the mind in the service of the Holy Spirit. ⁷This establishes the proper function of the mind and corrects its errors, which are merely lacks of love.
—ACIM (T-1.IV.2:6-7)

⬤ T-1.V
The miracle is a sign that the mind has chosen to be led by me in Christ’s service. ²The abundance of Christ is the natural result of choosing to follow Him. ³All shallow roots must be uprooted, because they are not deep enough to sustain you. ⁴The illusion that shallow roots can be deepened, and thus made to hold, is one of the distortions on which the reverse of the Golden Rule rests. ⁵As these false underpinnings are given up, the equilibrium is temporarily experienced as unstable. ⁶However, nothing is less stable than an upside-down orientation. ⁷Nor can anything that holds it upside down be conducive to increased stability.
—A Course in Miracles (T-1.V.6:1-7)

⬤ T-2.II
In the service of the right mind the denial of error frees the mind, and re-establishes the freedom of the will.
True denial is a powerful protective device. ²You can and should deny any belief that error can hurt you. ³This kind of denial is not a concealment but a correction. ⁴Your right mind depends on it. ⁵Denial of error is a strong defense of truth, but denial of truth results in miscreation, the projections of the ego. ⁶In the service of the right mind the denial of error frees the mind, and re-establishes the freedom of the will. ⁷When the will is really free it cannot miscreate, because it recognizes only truth.
—ACIM (T-2.II.2:1-7)

⬤ T-2.III
Because of the strength of its vision, it brings the mind into its service. Spiritual vision literally cannot see error, and merely looks for Atonement. ²All solutions the physical eye seeks dissolve. ³Spiritual vision looks within and recognizes immediately that the altar has been defiled and needs to be repaired and protected. ⁴Perfectly aware of the right defense it passes over all others, looking past error to truth. ⁵Because of the strength of its vision, it brings the mind into its service. ⁶This re-establishes the power of the mind and makes it increasingly unable to tolerate delay, realizing that it only adds unnecessary pain. ⁷As a result, the mind becomes increasingly sensitive to what it would once have regarded as very minor intrusions of discomfort.
—A Course in Miracles (T-2.III.4:1-7)

⬤ T-3.IV
This places it in the service of spirit, where perception is changed.
Perception always involves some misuse of mind, because it brings the mind into areas of uncertainty. ²The mind is very active. ³When it chooses to be separated it chooses to perceive. ⁴Until then it wills only to know. ⁵Afterwards it can only choose ambiguously, and the only way out of ambiguity is clear perception. ⁶The mind returns to its proper function only when it wills to know. ⁷This places it in the service of spirit, where perception is changed. ⁸The mind chooses to divide itself when it chooses to make its own levels. ⁹But it could not entirely separate itself from spirit, because it is from spirit that it derives its whole power to make or create. ¹⁰Even in miscreation the mind is affirming its Source, or it would merely cease to be. ¹¹This is impossible, because the mind belongs to spirit which God created and which is therefore eternal.
—ACIM (T-3.IV.5:1-11)

⬤ T-7.V
The body in the service of the ego can hurt other bodies, but this cannot occur unless the body has already been confused with the mind.

Healing is the one ability everyone can develop and must develop if he is to be healed. ²Healing is the Holy Spirit’s form of communication in this world, and the only one He accepts. ³He recognizes no other, because He does not accept the ego’s confusion of mind and body. ⁴Minds can communicate, but they cannot hurt. ⁵The body in the service of the ego can hurt other bodies, but this cannot occur unless the body has already been confused with the mind. ⁶This situation, too, can be used either for healing or for magic, but you must remember that magic always involves the belief that healing is harmful. ⁷This belief is its totally insane premise, and so it proceeds accordingly.
—A Course in Miracles (T-7.V.3:1-7)

⬤ T-7.VII
But in the service of the Holy Spirit, it can help you recognize part of reality, and thus appreciate all of it.
Whenever you deny a blessing to a brother _you_ will feel deprived, because denial is as total as love. ²It is as impossible to deny part of the Sonship as it is to love it in part. ³Nor is it possible to love it totally at times. ⁴You cannot be totally committed sometimes. ⁵Denial has no power in itself, but you can give it the power of your mind, whose power is without limit. ⁶If you use it to deny reality, reality is gone for you. ⁷_Reality cannot be partly appreciated._ ⁸That is why denying any part of it means you have lost the awareness of all of it. ⁹Yet denial is a defense, and so it is as capable of being used positively as well as negatively. ¹⁰Used negatively it will be destructive, because it will be used for attack. ¹¹But in the service of the Holy Spirit, it can help you recognize part of reality, and thus appreciate all of it. ¹²Mind is too powerful to be subject to exclusion. ¹³You will never be able to exclude yourself from your thoughts.
—ACIM (T-7.VII.1:1-13)

⬤ T-8.VII
In the service of uniting it becomes a beautiful lesson in communion, which has value until communion is.
If you use the body for attack, it is harmful to you. ²If you use it only to reach the minds of those who believe they are bodies, and teach them _through_ the body that this is not so, you will understand the power of the mind that is in you. ³If you use the body for this and only for this, you cannot use it for attack. ⁴In the service of uniting it becomes a beautiful lesson in communion, which has value until communion _is._ ⁵This is God’s way of making unlimited what you have limited. ⁶The Holy Spirit does not see the body as you do, because He knows the only reality of anything is the service it renders God on behalf of the function He gives it.
—ACIM (T-8.VII.3:1-6)

⬤ T-8.VII

—A Course in Miracles (T-8.VII.3:6)

⬤ T-13.X
The doubtful service of such displacement is to hide the real source of guilt, and keep from your awareness the full perception that it is insane.
You are accustomed to the notion that the mind can see the source of pain where it is not. ²The doubtful service of such displacement is to hide the real source of guilt, and keep from your awareness the full perception that it is insane. ³Displacement always is maintained by the illusion that the source of guilt, from which attention is diverted, must be true; and must be fearful, or you would not have displaced the guilt onto what you believed to be less fearful. ⁴You are therefore willing to look upon all kinds of “sources,” provided they are not the deeper source to which they bear no real relationship at all.
—ACIM (T-13.X.1:1-4)

⬤ T-22.VI
This is the only service that leads to freedom.
Be not disturbed at all to think how He can change the role of means and end so easily in what God loves, and would have free forever. ²But be you rather grateful that you can be the means to serve His end. ³This is the only service that leads to freedom. ⁴To serve this end the body must be perceived as sinless, because the goal is sinlessness. ⁵The lack of contradiction makes the soft transition from means to end as easy as is the shift from hate to gratitude before forgiving eyes. ⁶You will be sanctified by your brother, using your body only to serve the sinless. ⁷And it will be impossible for you to hate what serves whom you would heal.
—A Course in Miracles (T-22.VI.3:1-7)

⬤ T-22.VI
The gentle service that you give the Holy Spirit is service to yourself.
Child of peace, the light _has_ come to you. ²The light you bring you do not recognize, and yet you will remember. ³Who can deny himself the vision that he brings to others? ⁴And who would fail to recognize a gift he let be laid in Heaven through himself? ⁵The gentle service that you give the Holy Spirit is service to yourself. ⁶You who are now His means must love all that He loves. ⁷And what you bring is your remembrance of everything that is eternal. ⁸No trace of anything in time can long remain in a mind that serves the timeless. ⁹And no illusion can disturb the peace of a relationship that has become the means of peace.
—ACIM (T-22.VI.6:1-9)

⬤ T-29.V
Because unless the Holy Spirit gives the dream its function, it was made for hate, and will continue in death’s services.
A dream is given you in which he is your savior, not your enemy in hate. ²A dream is given you in which you have forgiven him for all his dreams of death; a dream of hope you share with him, instead of dreaming evil separate dreams of hate. ³Why does it seem so hard to share this dream? ⁴Because unless the Holy Spirit gives the dream its function, it was made for hate, and will continue in death’s services. ⁵Each form it takes in some way calls for death. ⁶And those who serve the lord of death have come to worship in a separated world, each with his tiny spear and rusted sword, to keep his ancient promises to die.
—A Course in Miracles (T-29.V.7:1-6)

⬤ W-135
The body, valueless and hardly worth the least defense, need merely be perceived as quite apart from you, and it becomes a healthy, serviceable instrument through which the mind can operate until its usefulness is over.
The “self” that needs protection is not real. ²The body, valueless and hardly worth the least defense, need merely be perceived as quite apart from you, and it becomes a healthy, serviceable instrument through which the mind can operate until its usefulness is over. ³Who would want to keep it when its usefulness is done?
—ACIM (W-135.8:1-3)

⬤ W-135
It is not free to be the means of helping in a plan which far exceeds its own protection, and which needs its service for a little while.
Enslavement of the body to the plans the unhealed mind sets up to save itself must make the body sick. ²It is not free to be the means of helping in a plan which far exceeds its own protection, and which needs its service for a little while. ³In this capacity is health assured. ⁴For everything the mind employs for this will function flawlessly, and with the strength that has been given it and cannot fail.
—A Course in Miracles (W-135.13:1-4)

It is, perhaps, not easy to perceive that self-initiated plans are but defenses, with the purpose all of them were made to realize. ²They are the means by which a frightened mind would undertake its own protection, at the cost of truth. ³This is not difficult to realize in some forms which these self-deceptions take, where the denial of reality is very obvious. ⁴Yet planning is not often recognized as a defense.
—ACIM (W-135.14:1-4)

The mind engaged in planning for itself is occupied in setting up control of future happenings. ²It does not think that it will be provided for, unless it makes its own provisions. ³Time becomes a future emphasis, to be controlled by learning and experience obtained from past events and previous beliefs. ⁴It overlooks the present, for it rests on the idea the past has taught enough to let the mind direct its future course.

16. The mind that plans is thus refusing to allow for change. ²What it has learned before becomes the basis for its future goals. ³Its past experience directs its choice of what will happen. ⁴And it does not see that here and now is everything it needs to guarantee a future quite unlike the past, without a continuity of any old ideas and sick beliefs. ⁵Anticipation plays no part at all, for present confidence directs the way.

17. Defenses are the plans you undertake to make against the truth. ²Their aim is to select what you approve, and disregard what you consider incompatible with your beliefs of your reality. ³Yet what remains is meaningless indeed. ⁴For it is your reality that is the “threat” which your defenses would attack, obscure, and take apart and crucify.

18. What could you not accept, if you but knew that everything that happens, all events, past, present and to come, are gently planned by One Whose only purpose is your good? ²Perhaps you have misunderstood His plan, for He would never offer pain to you. ³But your defenses did not let you see His loving blessing shine in every step you ever took. ⁴While you made plans for death, He led you gently to eternal life.

19. Your present trust in Him is the defense that promises a future undisturbed, without a trace of sorrow, and with joy that constantly increases, as this life becomes a holy instant, set in time, but heeding only immortality. ²Let no defenses but your present trust direct the future, and this life becomes a meaningful encounter with the truth that only your defenses would conceal.
—A Course in Miracles (W-135.15:1–19:2)

⬤ W-236
Today I give its service to the Holy Spirit to employ as He sees fit.
I have a kingdom I must rule. ²At times, it does not seem I am its king at all. ³It seems to triumph over me, and tell me what to think, and what to do and feel. ⁴And yet it has been given me to serve whatever purpose I perceive in it. ⁵My mind can only serve. ⁶Today I give its service to the Holy Spirit to employ as He sees fit. ⁷I thus direct my mind, which I alone can rule. ⁸And thus I set it free to do the Will of God.
—ACIM (W-236.1:1-8)

⬤ W-294
Let me not see it more than this today; of service for a while and fit to serve, to keep its usefulness while it can serve, and then to be replaced for greater good.
I am a Son of God. ²And can I be another thing as well? ³Did God create the mortal and corruptible? ⁴What use has God’s beloved Son for what must die? ⁵And yet a neutral thing does not see death, for thoughts of fear are not invested there, nor is a mockery of love bestowed upon it. ⁶Its neutrality protects it while it has a use. ⁷And afterwards, without a purpose, it is laid aside. ⁸It is not sick nor old nor hurt. ⁹It is but functionless, unneeded and cast off. ¹⁰Let me not see it more than this today; of service for a while and fit to serve, to keep its usefulness while it can serve, and then to be replaced for greater good.

2. My body, Father, cannot be Your Son. ²And what is not created cannot be sinful nor sinless; neither good nor bad. ³Let me, then, use this dream to help Your plan that we awaken from all dreams we made.
—A Course in Miracles (W-294.1:1–2:3)

⬤ M-25
Yet here is also a great channel of hope and healing in the Holy Spirit’s service.
“Psychic” abilities have been used to call upon the devil, which merely means to strengthen the ego. ⁶Yet here is also a great channel of hope and healing in the Holy Spirit’s service. ⁷Those who have developed “psychic” powers have simply let some of the limitations they laid upon their minds be lifted. ⁸It can be but further limitations they lay upon themselves if they utilize their increased freedom for greater imprisonment. ⁹The Holy Spirit needs these gifts, and those who offer them to Him and Him alone go with Christ’s gratitude upon their hearts, and His holy sight not far behind.
—ACIM (M-25.6:5-9)

⬤ S-3.II
We thank the body, then, for all the service it has given us.
This is what death should be; a quiet choice, made joyfully and with a sense of peace, because the body has been kindly used to help the Son of God along the way he goes to God. ²We thank the body, then, for all the service it has given us. ³But we are thankful, too, the need is done to walk the world of limits, and to reach the Christ in hidden forms and clearly seen at most in lovely flashes. ⁴Now we can behold Him without blinders, in the light that we have learned to look upon again.

3. We call it death, but it is liberty. ²It does not come in forms that seem to be thrust down in pain upon unwilling flesh, but as a gentle welcome to release. ³If there has been true healing, this can be the form in which death comes when it is time to rest a while from labor gladly done and gladly ended. ⁴Now we go in peace to freer air and gentler climate, where it is not hard to see the gifts we gave were saved for us. ⁵For Christ is clearer now; His vision more sustained in us; His Voice, the Word of God, more certainly our own.

4. This gentle passage to a higher prayer, a kind forgiveness of the ways of earth, can only be received with thankfulness. ²Yet first true healing must have come to bless the mind with loving pardon for the sins it dreamed about and laid upon the world. ³Now are its dreams dispelled in quiet rest. ⁴Now its forgiveness comes to heal the world and it is ready to depart in peace, the journey over and the lessons learned.
